District Theatre, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Interior Architects of a 1650 seat Lyric Theatre in Abu Dhabi, working with Theatre Projects Consultants.
Our design drew inspiration from natural forms found in the Abu Dhabi landscape. These take both angular and curvilinear forms. The hard geometry of rock and salt crystals, desert thorn bushes and Cistanche flowers is in stark contrast to the flowing lines of sand dunes, rocks weathered by wind, and the curvilinear marine forms such as corals.
We took the analogy of a ripe fruit, in which the soft edible content (the performance) is housed in a robust shell, protecting the precious content from outside. Hence the exterior of the auditorium volume has been treated with angular, geometric forms, whilst the fluid, softer forms are reserved for the interior.
Mall of Asia Theatre, Manila, Philippines
Interior Designers for the auditorium and foyers of an 1800-seat lyric theatre in Manila, Philippines. The design draws inspiration from bamboo groves, and bamboo has been used throughout the public areas, offering a highly sustainable alternative to hardwoods.
It has been specified in solid pressed form as vertical dowels forming screen walls in the foyer and auditorium, and as veneer on auditorium seating, doors and bar fronts. The auditorium side walls are treated with fabric-covered acoustic absorber behind the open bamboo diffuser screens.
The Island, Dubai, UAE
Interior designers for two auditoriums at the heart of a new hotel and leisure complex in Dubai. The Multi-Purpose Venue is an 1800-seat flexible space that can be used in several seating configurations, including a flat-floor banquet mode.
The design uses stainless steel mesh and treated metal panels which can then be lit in many different ways to create the required ambience.
The second auditorium–the Sphere–is a 450-seat immersive space that uses multiple projectors onto the wall and ceiling surfaces to create an unlimited variety of atmospheres
Galaxy Show Theatre, Macau
A collaboration with Theatre Projects Consultants to produce the outline design and theatre planning for a new 1800-seat show theatre for the Galaxy Casino development in Macau, China.
Our role was to develop the front of house and backstage planning within an envelope prescribed by the overall master-planning architect.
The theatre has been designed to accommodate both regular entertainment shows for the casino customers as well as occasional award ceremonies.
The Regent, Deal, Kent
The Regent Cinema has been a feature of the Deal seafront for 80 years but has stood empty since 2008. It was constructed originally as a music pavilion, replacing a Victorian bandstand and skating rink.
We were asked to make several different proposals for the site, all of which had a cinema at the core, but with varying other uses. The final scheme has two cinemas of 120 and 90 seats, together with an open plan foyer space and 80-seat café.
Since 2005 we have carried out consultancy work for the following auditorium projects:
Dubai Design District (4 auditorium concepts)
Hellenic Cosmos Theatre, Athens (auditorium planning)
Helsinki Opera House (re-seating)
Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens (auditorium planning)
West Kowloon Cultural District (venue master-planning)
