Breathing new life into a Victorian country home
Nestled within the rolling Wealden countryside near Hawkhurst, Elm Hill House offered a unique opportunity to thoughtfully extend a mid-Victorian residence while preserving its historic charm and architectural integrity. Arts Architecture International was commissioned to develop a sensitive extension that would complement the original character of the property while adapting it for contemporary family living. Following an in-depth design exploration and a series of concept options, the chosen proposal introduced a beautifully integrated two-storey extension inspired by the style and proportions of the original house. The new design includes a spacious family kitchen, a dramatic vaulted playroom, a boot room, and utility spaces at ground-floor level, alongside two generous en suite guest bedrooms above. To further enhance the functionality of the home, the existing kitchen is being transformed into a dedicated dry pantry and butler’s pantry, creating an elegant transition between the kitchen and formal dining areas. The project carefully balances heritage architecture with modern comfort, resulting in a timeless residential extension designed to evolve with the needs of family life. This project exemplifies our architectural work in Hawkhurst, the High Weald and beyond, and we invite you to contact us to discuss your own bespoke residential aspirations. Contract Value: Approx. £600k Project Status: Ongoing
