10 Elm Hill House, Hawkhurst, Kent

Green Lodge: Welcome

Set in the gentle contours of the Wealden countryside, Elm Hill House presented a rare opportunity: to sensitively extend a mid-Victorian home while honouring its architectural heritage. Our design approach at Arts Architecture International responded to the character of the existing building and the aspirations of the new owners, blending tradition with contemporary family life. Elm Hill House project

Elm Hill House is a mid-Victorian country house in a Wealden landscape near the village of Hawkhurst. The new owners invited us to prepare designs for a Planning Application to extend the existing building (a service wing that had once stood to the north of the main house was replaced by a conservatory in the mid-20th century).

We produced a series of options, and the client settled on a two-storey design echoing the style of the original house, consisting of a new family kitchen, a vaulted playroom, boot room and utility room on the ground floor, with two large ensuite guest bedrooms on the level above.

The existing kitchen is being converted into a dry pantry and butler’s pantry (a china closet with display cupboards linking the kitchen to the formal dining room).

Contract Value: £600k approx.

Status: Ongoing
