Contemporary rural living rooted in heritage design
Set within two acres of orchard, meadow, and woodland overlooking the Medway Valley, Castle Acre is a beautifully considered residential transformation that combines post-war character with contemporary sustainable living. Arts Architecture International was commissioned in 2022 to design a substantial extension and loft conversion that would preserve the home’s original vernacular charm while introducing modern functionality and energy-efficient design. The project involved replacing outdated outbuildings with a carefully designed L-shaped extension incorporating a welcoming entrance hall, spacious open-plan living and dining areas, a utility room, and a double garage. The design responds sensitively to the rural setting, maintaining architectural harmony with the original property while enhancing the flow and usability of the home. This methodology reflects our design solutions for heritage properties across the region, including projects in Hawkhurst, where navigating rural planning policy and securing formal regularisation approvals form a key part of our service. A full loft conversion was also introduced to create a dedicated home office, study, bedroom, and bathroom, connected by a newly designed staircase. Cabrio balconies were added to both upper-level rooms, maximising panoramic views across the surrounding countryside and bringing natural light deep into the interior spaces. Sustainability formed a key part of the project, with high-performance aluminium windows, an air-source heat pump, and a large photovoltaic solar panel array integrated into the design to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Contract Value: Approx. £300k Project Status: Completed in 2024
