Delivering a flexible modern auditorium for the Grove Theatre
The Grove Theatre in Dunstable is a contemporary 780-seat performance venue developed as part of a major new-build cultural project designed by Glenn Howells Architects. In 2006, Arts Architecture International was appointed alongside Theatreplan LLP to help realise the delivery of the auditorium interior within a fast-paced design and construct programme where precision, coordination, and timing were critical. Our role focused on developing the auditorium’s interior design concept, bespoke house lighting scheme, and custom-designed light fittings, creating a visually engaging and technically refined performance environment. Working closely with Acoustic Dimensions, we carefully designed the tier fronts, wall treatments, and ceiling profiles to integrate acoustic performance seamlessly into the architectural character of the space. Flexibility was central to the auditorium’s design. The stalls' seating was installed on removable wagons, enabling the venue to transform quickly from a traditional seated theatre configuration into a flat-floor arena suitable for a wide variety of performances, events, and community uses. Arts Architecture International also maintained an active on-site consultancy role throughout the installation process, ensuring the design vision was successfully carried through to completion. The Grove Theatre officially opened in April 2007 and continues to serve as a key cultural venue within the region.
